Leading Ophthalmologists Become KAMRA Inlay PatientsDoctors discuss benefits of being a patient to a procedure they perform

IRVINE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– 20110829 —

AcuFocus (www.AcuFocus.com), maker of an innovative corneal inlay that may revolutionize the treatment of near vision loss (presbyopia) in patients over 40, today announced that three top ophthalmologists, who suffered from various degrees of presbyopia, have recently received the KAMRAâ„¢ inlay with great results.

Ophthalmologists Robert Rivera, Rick Wolfe and Dean Corbett, MDs all had successful surgery to correct their vision loss, by receiving the KAMRA inlay. Each of the doctors had different degrees of presbyopia and all three are reporting dramatic improvements in near and intermediate vision without reduction in their distance vision.

“The debilitating nature of presbyopia was affecting my practice and my personal life. Based on my experience as a surgeon and clinical investigator for the KAMRA inlay, I knew the inlay was the best choice for me out of all the available presbyopia-correcting solutions,” commented Dean Corbett, MD.

The experience for all three surgeons was very similar. While they were motivated to address their presbyopia, they initially had various concerns about how the inlay would affect their vision and their ability to perform surgery. The benefits they experienced were an improvement in both near and intermediate vision, maintenance of their distance vision, freedom from eyeglasses to perform everyday tasks and no interference in performing surgical procedures. They all agreed that being able to understand the effects of presbyopia and the healing process as a patient, improves their skills as ophthalmologists.

“Good quality distance vision is very important to me and my active lifestyle. When evaluating options for treatment of my presbyopia, I wanted a solution that would allow me to function without reading glasses and without compromising my distance vision. With the KAMRA inlay, I experienced an almost immediate improvement in my near and intermediate vision and most importantly, my distance vision is still excellent,” commented Robert Rivera, MD.

In addition, Rick Wolfe, MD commented, “I am enjoying the ability to perform everyday tasks without glasses and don’t even notice that the inlay is there. It is truly liberating.”

“It is a true testament to a technology’s success when surgeons become patients,” said Ed Peterson, AcuFocus President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are very pleased with how happy these doctors are with their results.”

All three surgeons will be attending the upcoming 2011 ESCRS in Vienna, Austria and presenting their experiences both as surgeons and as patients receiving the inlay during this year’s meeting.
