Start-ups blijven bloeien
Een nieuw rapport dat vandaag is gepubliceerd in samenwerking met Nordic Life Science Days van Stockholm-Uppsala Life Science, Stockholm Science City en Uppsala BIO toont groei bij starters, deze helpen de regio haar positie als een van de toonaangevende Europese en internationale life science clusters te behouden *

Het rapport toont dat 611 bedrijven werkgelegenheid bieden aan 20.852 mensen, nog steeds gedomineerd door drie grote farmaceuten; AstraZeneca met 3.943 medewerkers, GE Healthcare (1.232) en Fresenius Kabi (1.008).

Het totale personeelsbestand is echter afgenomen 2009-2012, voor een groot deel is dit te wijten aan AstraZeneca’s downsizing, er zijn tekenen dat de situatie zich gestabiliseerd heeft. Tekenen van consistente groei worden gerapporteerd in een aantal life science-bedrijven in alle onderafdelingen, Inclusief Fresenius Kabi, Oasmia Pharmaceuticals, Atlas Antilichamen, Bactiguard, Cepheid en Olink. Verder, de 350 startende en MKB-bedrijven met minder dan 50 werknemers laten een gestage toename van expansie van jaar tot jaar zien, ten belope van 32% 2007-2012 Naast de sterke wetenschappelijke basis voor innovatie, kan een redenen hiervoor zijn dat de grote publiek -private investeringen in de financiering van onderzoek, onderzoek en fysieke infrastructuur in totaal meer dan 60 miljard SEK ($ 9miljard) ter ondersteuning van bestaande als nieuwe bedrijven te stimuleren.

Eugen Steiner, uit Healthcap, een toonaangevende wereldwijde gezondheidszorg investeringsfonds gevestigd in Stockholm was ingenomen met het rapport: “Hoewel we investeren in de hele wereld, blijven we een pijpleiding van uitstekende mogelijkheden hier te zien in de regio. De stevige wetenschappelijke basis en industriële traditie, nu gesteund door een aantal forse steun van de overheid en een nieuwe generatie van ondernemers, creëert een uitstekende “eco-systeem” voor de life science zakelijke groei. De inkrimping van AZ moet worden gezien in de mondiale context en het belangrijkste is dat de sector zich lijkt aangepast te hebben en vooruit kijkt op een positieve manier. ”

Erik Forsberg, CEO van Uppsala Bio, merkte op: “Er is een lange traditie van de industrie en de academische wereld samen samenhangend en productief dat blijft Beide stimuleren start-ups en internationale samenwerkingsverbanden aan te trekken. Nieuwe Initiativen dus helpen: zoals onze eigen groeiend succes BIO-X programma’s die meer afgeven gerichte industrie vraagt ??om innovatie rechtstreeks naar onze onderzoekscentra “.

Start-ups continue to thrive, boosting region’s Top 10 position 

Stockholm – Uppsala, September 9, 2014: A new report published today in conjunction with Nordic Life Science Days by Stockholm-Uppsala Life Science, Stockholm Science City and Uppsala BIO shows that growth in start-ups and SME’s in particular are helping the region maintain its position as one of the leading European and international life science clusters*

The report shows that 611 companies employ 20,852 people, still dominated by a big three of AstraZeneca with 3,943 employees, GE Healthcare (1,232) and Fresenius Kabi (1,008).  However, although total work force has decreased from 2009 to 2012, to a large extent due to AstraZeneca’s downsizing, there are signs that the situation has stabilized. Signs of consistent growth are reported in a number of life science companies across all subsections, including Fresenius Kabi, Oasmia Pharmaceuticals, Atlas Antibodies, Bactiguard, Cepheid and Olink. Furthermore, the 350 start-up and SME companies with less than 50 employees show a steady increase year on year, amounting to 32% from 2007 to 2012. In addition to the strong science innovation base, a reasons for this could be the major public-private investments in research funding, research and physical infrastructure totaling over 60 billion SEK (9 billion US dollars) designed to both support existing companies and stimulate a new generation of companies.

Eugen Steiner, from Healthcap, a leading global healthcare investment fund based in Stockholm welcomed the report: “Whilst we invest around the world, we continue to see a pipeline of excellent opportunities here in the region. The strong science base and industrial tradition, now backed by some aggressive government support and a new generation of entrepreneurs creates an excellent “eco-system” for life science business growth. The downsizing of AZ has to be seen in the global context and the important thing is that the sector seems to have adapted and is moving forward in a positive manner.”

New initiatives are also helping such as our own increasingly successful BIO-X programme which sees industry issuing targeted calls for innovation directly to our research centres.”

The report will be presented on the Stockholm-Uppsala stand at the Nordic Life Science Days at 13.30 on Tuesday September 9.
